Wajda was elected in Poland's first partially free parliamentary elections after the fall of communism in 1989 and served as a senator until 1991.
This year has been designated the Year of Andrzej Wajda in Poland, marking the centenary of his birth and the 10th anniversary of his death.
Commemorations include exhibitions, film screenings and festivals, theatre performances, educational projects, conferences and lectures.
